Guided and inspired by the powerful women in her life, including her mother Anita Gaskin, cousin Jackie, and grandmother Mrs. Willie Mae Gaskin a largely recognized community activist in Detroit Mi. Tamaki has carved a remarkable path for herself.
As the owner of Dread Bar, a renowned full-service loc and hair salon in Lansing, Michigan, Tamaki has become a master of her craft. With a passion for helping others succeed, she has also taken on the role of teacher and mentor, shaping the futures of aspiring master lecticans and salon owners. However, Tamaki’s ambitions do not stop there. Recognizing the immense potential within the natural hair industry, she has set her sights on expanding Dread Bar into a natural hair school. Through this venture, she aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to capitalize on and monetize the natural hair game.
In addition to her thriving presence in the hair industry, Tamaki has delved into the world of commercial and residential property business. TCI Properties, named after her two daughters and son, has established a strong foothold in Lansing, Las Vegas, and Texas. The Lansing commercial property, which houses Dread Bar, serves as an incubator for other minority-owned businesses, including barber shops, nail salons, a legal office, health and wellness stores, aestheticians, and music production studios.
Tamaki’s achievements in business are a testament to her unwavering dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. Yet, what truly sets her apart is the love, care, and trust she has fostered within and outside the Lansing community. Her endeavors have not only brought success but have also created a nurturing environment where dreams can flourish, and minority-owned businesses can thrive. Karmen Johnson, Treasury
Karmen Johnson, the dynamic Executive Director of Marvelous Lifestyles Outreach, is a firm believer that moms can be both bosses and exceptional mothers, creating their own paths to prosperity. Born and raised in the vibrant city of Detroit, MI, Karmen’s journey is marked by resilience, determination, and a passion for empowering communities. A proud alumna of Cass Tech High School, Karmen ventured beyond her hometown to pursue higher education at West Virginia University. There, she delved into Business Administration with a Concentration in Marketing and a minor in Advertising, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
After graduating, Karmen transitioned to Grand Rapids, MI, in 2011, where she entered the corporate arena, holding managerial roles at major corporations such as Enterprise Holdings, Lindt and Sprugli, and Fifth Third Bank. Her expertise lies in logistics and customer service, showcasing her knack for leadership and strategic thinking. In 2017, Karmen took a significant step in her educational journey by returning to West Virginia to complete her Graduate program. She emerged with a Masters Degree in Integrated Marketing Communications, a testament to her commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Beyond her professional achievements, Karmen finds joy in spending quality time with her husband, children, extended family, and friends. A true adventurer at heart, she enjoys traveling and sightseeing, embracing new experiences and cultures. As a mom of six children and a devoted fur baby parent, Karmen’s life is a balancing act of family, career, and personal fulfillment. Karmen’s dedication to community empowerment extends to her role as a coach for Girls on the Run (GOTR) and girls/boys basketball. Through Marvelous Lifestyles Outreach, she strives to inspire and cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs within their own communities. Dr. Janet Atkinson, Vice President
Dr. Janet Atkinson is a seasoned entrepreneur and business consultant with over 24 years of experience empowering businesses to thrive. As the founder and owner of Imanij Business Consulting, Dr. Atkinson provides comprehensive services, including scaling ventures, developing innovative products, and assisting clients in building their businesses. Her approach ensures businesses are equipped with actionable strategies for growth and success.
In addition to consulting, Dr. Atkinson leads Imanij Marketing Company, where she offers full-service marketing solutions. These include video creation, social media management, graphic design, website development, and search engine optimization. Her expertise lies in developing unique selling propositions and building brand identities tailored to the specific needs of her clients.
Dr. Atkinson’s academic achievements include a Doctorate in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing from Keiser University, a Master of Business Administration from Strayer University, and a Bachelor of Science from Eastern Michigan University. These qualifications complement her practical experience, making her an invaluable resource for businesses.
A passionate advocate for youth entrepreneurship, Dr. Atkinson founded the Youth Builder Community Development Corporation, a foundation that provides programs to help young people start online businesses. She is also a published author and educator, having written books like How to Start a Business and The Secrets of Marketing, and taught master-level marketing courses.
Dr. Atkinson’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community impact defines her as a leader dedicated to helping others achieve their potential. Her vast knowledge in branding, marketing, and business development continues to inspire professionals and young entrepreneurs alike.

She is the proud owner of ELOHX Studio, a premier salon dedicated to the art and care of locs. Known for her exceptional skills and personalized approach, Alaina has cultivated a loyal clientele who appreciate her expertise and passion for natural hair care.
